Tracks

by Ethel Mortenson Davis

After the storm,
on our morning walk,
deer tracks ran
along the water’s edge
in the heavy snow.

These were running tracks,
with great distance
between each footprint,
its force making
a deep imprint in the snow.

Yesterday was the last day
of hunting season.
A heavy snow and ice storm
ran all day,
keeping hunters at bay.

Because hunters cannot
hunt along the water’s edge,
these deer found refuge
along the lake’s shore,
among the cedar groves—

respite for another year.

In the Unsettled Homeland of Dreams Book Signing

I did a book presentation and signing at Novel Bay Booksellers in Sturgeon Bay today from 2 to 4 p.m. A crowd showed up and a bunch of that novel and other books that I have written sold. Ethel came and took a couple of photographs. Thanks go to John Maggitti and Liz Welter for sponsoring a great event!

Standing Feather, Betty Hayes Albright at Otherworlds Books in Sturgeon Bay

The owner of Otherworlds Books in Sturgeon Bay is featuring two Four Windows Press books at her bookstore, The Glowing Pink and Skipping Stones.  I hope some of the readers of this blog will consider buying a copy.  They are both really good books!

Bards and Brew Tonight!

I just got an email from Ralph Murre, a former Door County Poet Laureate who is a classic poet!, reminding me that I will be one of two featured poets at Starboard Brewing, 151 N. 3rd, in downtown Sturgeon Bay this evening. Starboard Brewing is famous around here for its craft beers. I hope those in this area can attend this event. It tends to be something else.

Chuck Sully will be the other featured poet with his poetry about sailing and wild waters. There will also be an open mike. There tends to be quite an audience.

OtherWorld’s Bookstore Display

A new bookstore has opened on Third Avenue in Sturgeon Bay! We used to have two bookstores, but they have closed. Now Margaret Magle has opened a new bookstore on Third Avenue downtown. She is, right now, featuring books by Ethel Mortenson and Thomas Davis. We are hoping both tourists and local folks visit the store at 41 N. Third Avenue since we are hoping Margaret succeeds in her new endeavor.

Flowering Magnolia

We woke up to 20 inches of snow this morning, April 14, and it’s still snowing. We’re supposed to get snow the rest of the day into tomorrow.
