Rabbit

by Ethel Mortenson Davis

All week
the rabbit
came to the fence.

The dogs barked
at first,
then gave up.

The rabbit was
covered in tumors,
one large one covering
the side of his face
with bulging eye.

The last day
it cried in pain.

One of the dogs
went over the fence
and snapped it’s neck,

it’s message to us
delivered.

The bunny came to where the garden was being watered, trying to find something to eat in the drought.

Presence

by Ethel Mortenson Davis

She had missed
the elk and rabbit
this morning.

She didn’t see
the grasses parted
where a trail
was apparent,
where rabbit brush
was trampled down
from the great bodies of elk.

But they watched her
as she walked by.

She unaware,
this morning,
of their presence.
