The Poet’s Walk
The Mourning Cloaks 1
accompanied us
along our walk.
“They said,
“He loved and
not to be afraid.” 2
“That was the sum
of your being,
your purpose,
wasn’t it?
“Do you remember
when you told us,
‘Go take
the Poet’s Walk along
the Hudson River.
It’s a place I like
to go?”
So today we walk
The Poet’s Walk,
joined by the
Mourning Cloaks
to say our last goodbye.
Note: 1 Mourning Cloaks are butterflies.
2 This was Kevin’s last message, written after he could not speak. The full message was, “Kevin loves and not to be afraid.” Kevin passed away 2 years ago from today.

Note: Taken on November 18, 2007. Kevin’s comment, “This little cactus was hiding under a rock out in El Malpais.” The El Malpais is a volcanic area where massive lava flows have created a wild, difficult terrain. Not far from Continental Divide, we went for a memorable hike into the El Malpais in 2007, during which this photograph as taken.

Note: One of the most wonderful things in Kevin’s life was Leo. When he was so sick he could hardly move, Leo was brought to the hospital in Poughkeepsie. Kevin was wheeled to the first floor in a wheel chair. There was no expectation that he would be able to go home again at that point, although that turned out not to be true. The minute he saw Leo Kevin surprised everyone by getting out of the wheelchair and getting on the floor with his cat. Leo crawled up next to him and spent the next hour taking care of the person who had rescued him on a cold day when he was a kitten and taken him into his human life.
