Leo

a photograph by Alazanto, Kevin Davis, our son

Note: Leo was one of the most wonderful parts of Kevin’s life. He rescued Leo as a wild kitten from underneath his car on a cold morning in Poughkeepsie, New York. When Kevin was extremely ill Leo came to the hospital, and even though Kevin could no longer walk, he slipped out of his wheelchair and got on the floor where Leo immediately snuggled up to him. This photo was taken November 4, 2007.

Walking Doors

by Alazanto, Kevin Davis

An old woman sits at edge of the road.
She waits for doors to walk through her,
but is greeted by a kiss to her cheek
from lush breezes
finding their sanctuary
in a sun who wants to be close.

A jackrabbit takes comfort in scurrying across her feet,
ears trailing a thousand miles–
and dangerous expectations
lunging forward a thousand years.

Some might say
needles of energy
warn of their love
as they patter onto the tops of black umbrellas.

Ripening seashells,
pernicious treetops, and
attentive arrowheads
all follow in slipstream
of that affectionate sun:
nova in a moment’s clarity.

The movement of an eternity
might be introduced to stillness:
Pocket mirrors would turn to sand,
covering the earth
and reflecting a newfound radiance of boiling hope.
Empty clay basins would soon over-wash
with psychical retinas,
as whispers emerge from the roots of long grasses.

In such confusing brilliance…
…the breezes are left to ponder,

“What if the sun no longer wanted to be so close?”

The sun assures,

“My affections are captured by your songs.
We both find sanctuary in our binding differences.
We must never doubt the depths of inspiration.”

Sonnet 18

by Thomas Davis

The doctor said what needed to be said.
We asked the questions that we had to ask.
Compassion lined the doctor’s careful mask.
She held him; he held her; the awful dread
we’d felt at seeing him so weak in bed
now turned into a nightmare, a formal masque
that left our darkest primal fears unmasked,
our sense of living shattered, left in shreds.

How long? he asked the doctor as he sighed.
The doctor said, two weeks, some hours, some days.
She bent her head into his lap and cried;
he sobbed, his mother cried; I fought the haze
unmanning me. What could we do? I tried

to think, but, looking at my son, was dazed.
