Drought

by Ethel Mortenson Davis

Had I not gone the extra mile
this morning,
I would have missed
the unexpected
deep purple flowers
of the Desert Lupine—
shockingly beautiful–
with undertones of crimson

among the death-like color
of the gray rabbit brush.
